Coaching or Psychotherapy?Coaching is relatively new as a client-centered "helping profession". But coaches have been around for a long time, most often thought of as trainers, guides, and mentors to athletes. Life coaching is a growing profession, developing out of business consulting and executive coaching. Coaching is similar in some ways to psychotherapy (counseling, talk therapy, etc) and yet is quite different in very basic ways. Both methods of helping people traverse a path to self growth. However, therapy is often past oriented and is based on a medical model that "patients" need healing. Coaching is generally present and future oriented and goal focused (learn more).
